Wiimote to MIDI

The english magazine "Dj Mag" launches his VJ competition for the 4th time.
I like the idea of highlighting and promoting very good VJs, but the magazine really doesn't reflects the quality and diversity of our scene, and has quite strange rules:

In 2004, for the first VJ Poll, winners AddictiveTV (1st position), Coldcut (5th), Exceeda (10th), D-fuse (12th), Charles Kriel (14th) were also judges for the competition, while VJ Anyone (9th position) was working for the magazine (no blame to them, I just don't understand how the magazine could allow that).

Since then, the results didn't change much, even when people started to vote online (this generated loads of myspace spam and other "VOTE FOR ME" emails non-senses) and for a strange reason, many of the TOP 20 names are not even VJs but Audiovisual Acts.
Since 2004, "live visuals" evolved quicker than ever, and most of the best new VJs remains ignored by the Londonian magazine, so it might be time to create an independent competition, based on actual quality of work, selected by people deeply involved in the visual scene.

Before that, I feel a bit bored (like xray and many more) by people spamming stuff everywhere, so I decided to do my own advert..

Feel free to use them as well if Vjs flood you with their promo, you can post that back :)

english versionWiimote to MIDI

Following the post I did about using nintendo's wiimote as a MIDI controller, I had loads of emails about the same issue: People using the popular music sequencer Ableton live, couldn't setup rotation and acceleration MIDI adresses properly, as the wiimote constantly sends many values, and using ableton's auto detect function is getting a bit crazy..

I just made a new Glovepie script to make things a bit easier, and send each value separately.
Now when you use the MIDI autodetect function, you need to Press:
- F1, F2 or F3 to get the wiimote X, Y or Z rotation value.
- F4, F5 or F6 to get the X, Y or Z acceleration values.

When this is done, you need to Press the B button to activate all these midi values (acceleration/ rotation), and you can still use all the buttons to trigger loops, effects etc..

Wiimote to MIDI: Ableton Live
The above link is a Glovepie script, you need to follow this tutorial to use it.

This is quite a basic update, but I know that this is gonna help some of you, and I'll do my best to do a proper update (with infrared positioning, internal speaker and force feedback).

english versionWiimote to MIDI

Probably the best "visual festival" ever...

The team behind the VJ Software "Modul8" organised in Geneva the third edition of Mapping,  their audio-visual festival: a great audio lineup (including the amazings Birdy Nam Nam) and a very dense program, with exhibition, VJ sets, talks and workshops.

The festival took place mainly in 2 venues: the BAC (Contemporary Art Builbing) with installations, ehxibition and talks during the day, and le Zoo, and great club for events during the two weekends.
A great atmosphere, and a very good opportunity to meet other visual artists, and talk with a very unusual audience at the BAC (kids and grannies..).
I did a Workshop about the Wiimote to Midi, a VJ set for the D&B night, and a mapping on some large cubes built by Cube3, from Geneva.

Here are a few pictures of the Cube mapping (some of them with Clandestine from Montreal):

View the slideshow.

My highlights were: 3Destruct AV installation by Lego_man and some friends, an immersive 3 dimensions piece, very impressive and a real experience.
Exyzt did a nice installation at the Bac, and an interesting VJ set with Wireless live cam.
Clandestine did a nice A/V set with pheek, with hypnotic minimal geometric shapes, messing up with color perception, and retinal persistence..

Also, very good stuff from Narrative Labs, V-scratch, Sigma6, Quayola and many more..
More infos on the mapping's blog, and some great pictures by Ork.

Many thanks to Boris and to the Modul8 crew, who did such a nice work, and booked great artists, pushing forward visual art..

Video report from ClubTransmediale in Berlin.

Following the A/V set I did at the M12 gallery during Avit Berlin, the venue owners, visomat.inc, asked me to do some similar visual mapping for an installation at ClubTransmediale, a great clubnight and festival at clubMaria, with visuals, workshops, interactive stuff..

So I came back to Berlin a month later, at the end of January, to spend a week the German capital and collaborate with visomat to animate and enlight the minimal sculpture they prepared..
As this year festival's theme was "Building Space", the idea was to create visuals during the event, and explore the links between space, volume, depth and light.

Here's a short video of the installation and the visuals projected:

This project has probably been one of my most interesting and inspiring so far, many thanks to clubtransmediale and visomat.

english versionPaysages Electroniques - Lille

I finally have a bit of time these days to post some news about the tour.. It started really well with a VJ set for a Breaks gig at the Batofar in Paris, where they had an all new video setup, thanks to the resident VJs, Qualityscreen and VJ Eye. I only managed to take one picture, as I was pretty busy trying to get my wiimote to work..

Then after a few days in Rennes, my hometown, I headed to Lille for Paysages Electroniques, a great festival founded by 2 VJs, Céline et Jérôme from zelabo. The audio lineup was pretty cool, with a Mutek night with Akufen, also Yuksek, Cuizinier, and the visual booking was wicked, with probably the best VJ lineup I've seen so far (or at least my favorite).

Among the highlights:
- The Audio visual performance: Aviorama from MFO (his vjset at clubTransmediale in January was already impressive) his a "must see" in the few good A/V acts. The Tri-projection was also very effective !
- Sanchtv, performed for the first time on a superwide 4 screens setup. He also solved the technical problems we had when he came at cuisine #4, by buying a realtime-processing monster, which allows a 4096x768 render at 60fps with vvvv. Here are his Blog posts before and after the festival.
- Aalto and Ratsi played on sunday, both with their very personnal style and self-produced material, and did a great use of the 2X 8:3 format (thanks to the vga scaler) and did a "jam" at the end, mixing and melting their visuals..

I did a mapping installation, using some strange furniture of the club to project on. It was actually a bit tricky, as the room was very bright during the day, but I finally managed to do the mapping and work on some minimal visuals. My first installation with projections of all the sides of the cubes, I'll probably carry on this way, to actually "skin" object..

Huge thanks to zelabo for doing such a great event and for the perfect organisation !

Here are more pictures of the festival:

Quite a lot of bookings in the next two months, especially since the installation I did at clubtransmediale in Berlin with visomat in January, and I received nice feedbacks from festival organisers and promoters. I'll be on the road for about two months (that's my first proper "tour"), so if you are around one of these events, and interested in VJing, live visuals, drop me an email for guestlist or just to chat and have a pint :)

Google

english versionWiimote to MIDI

Following a large amount of emails I received, I decided to translate in english my recent post dedicated to the new Nintendo's toy . Released in December 2006, the last console of the Japanese brand, the Wii, claims to be revolutionary by its new user interface, the Wiimote (hydrid of gamepad, remote control and movements sensor ), which completely changes the manner of playing by putting at contribution the player, who can from now interact more naturaly with the game, rather than simply press buttons.

How does it work?
In addition to the traditional buttons, force feedback and the integrated mini-speaker, the true innovation is the presence of a gravity and acceleration sensor (the ADXL330, used in the army or automobile safety, for airbags systems) inside the Wiimote which collects the movements and acceleration of the Wiimote on each of the 3 axis, X, Y et Z.

The good news is that rather than using a proprietary protocol to transmit the infos from the Wiimote to the Wii, and then lock its hardware to keep an exclusive use of it, Nintendo has made the excellent decision (probably by commercial will) to use the Bluetooth protocol, standard of communication on PC and Mac for several years. This means that you can connect your Wiimote to your computer, and  program it rather simply for any use you want.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

In this Post, we will learn how to connect Wiimote to a PC, and how to transform the values received into MIDI signals, to be able to control any VJing software (like Arkaos) or production/live audio (Ableton to mention only one of them).

Requirements:
- A Wiimote, of course (approximately £20/35$, online or at your local  video games shop).
- A Bluetooth Dongle  (if your computer doesn't have Bluetooth already, about £10/15$).
- Bluesoleil (shareware, it usually comes for free with Bluetooth dongles).
- GlovePie (freeware).
- MidiYoke (freeware, required for MIDI).

Connect your Wiimote to your PC:
Once your dongle installed, your Wiimote unpacked and filled with fresh batteries:
1 - Launch Bluesoleil (a grey icon appears in the taskbar, and then becomes blue once once the Bluetooth dongle initialized. Now, double-click on the blue icon to launch the program)
2 - You have to enable the "detection" mode: press simultaneously buttons 1 and 2 of your magic remote (LEDs start to flicker).
In Bluesoleil, start "device detection" by clicking on the orange sphere in the middle.
3 - Your Wiimote has been detected, and appears as an icon in Bluesoleil, now you must activate the communication: select the wiimote icon (1 click) and then click on  "HID service", the mouse icon. if the connection is capricious, you might have to press simultaneously buttons 1 and 2 again,
If all occurs well, you should see a small animation which means a successful connection.

Interpret the signals:
The Wiimote is now connected, and sends its signal to your PC, but it is not being interpreted yet. This is where GlovePie will be helpful, to convert the signals received and return them to your favorites softwares and games.
Indeed, the software developed by Carl Kenner has the role of converting any type of signal (from a mouse, Joystick, a P5 glove) into another signal (MIDI, variables...) using a simple scripting language and/or a GUI.

Now, start GlovePie (version 0.29 to date). By default, the freeware opens on the empty script editor. Fortunately, there are loads of scripts provided with the install: for example, load WiimoteScripts/WiiMouse 0.1.PIE, and click on RUN, and you can now control your mouse cursor with your Wiimote. Also, you have to try Drummerkit, and then you can play "air battery" :)

Midiiiiiii !
So, now it gets exciting.. Everything is now ready, the last thing to do is to install MidiYoke (a virtual MIDI port, which emulates a MIDI device to use like a "bridge" with your midi softwares) then download and launch this Glovepie script, which will finally enable you to get the Wiimote movements to any software supporting midi.

In the latest version beta0.2, you get the  of  X, Y and Z slope value from your Wiimote, which are converted into  #CC values 30, 31 and 32, variables from 0 to 127, which allows you to scratch a video or to fade it up and down by waving your Wiimote in the air. Also you must test it with Ableton, the results are very surprising, especially on the live effects!

As you can see, the buttons are mapped to "midi notes", and allows you to launch events very simply. You can also send keyboard events instead, or change midi notes values depending on your needs. The script is now comented in english, and I will keep updating it this way.

It's still a bit basic, and there are many extra things possible, so the next steps will be to use acceleration sensors, use the sensorbar, and also use the Nunchuk (the second gamepad available), and maybe connect more wiimotes for multi-user interaction...
Don't hesistate to post links of what you achieved with wiimote2midi, and ask for updates or special requests...
